Usually, the results are noticeable after two-three tanning sessions, but it may take a few weeks of consistency to get a defined tan (at least 3 times weekly). If you are preparing a base tan before going on a holiday, consider starting tanning three weeks prior.

Different sunbeds have different power and UV output. However, since 2009 all sunbeds should operate with a maximum UV output colloquially referred to as '0.3'. This is is the equivalent of the Mediteranean midday summer sun. A professional operator (we recommend you use a salon in membership of TSA) will advise accordingly with one objective: to avoid over-exposure and burning!
UV exposure is the main source of vitamin D production. Just a few minutes on a sunbed 2-3 times a week, will enable your body to produce sufficient vitamin D. From October - May it is impossible to produce vitamin D from sunshine exposure in the UK or Ireland, as the sun is 100 weak. It is also very, very difficult to get enough daily vitamin D from diet and multivitamins.
You will lose them, they can not be carried over or transferred to someone else
The UV output of our sunbeds, generally referred to as 0.3, is approved by the EU and complies with all British and European consumer safety regulations. A 0.3 tanning session delivers the same tanning effect as the mid-day Mediterranean summer sun and reduces the risk of burning.
WHAT DOES 0.3 MEAN?
It's technical. But essentially, 0.3W/m2 is the amount of UV output that the EU's Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (SCCP) set as the limit for effective irradiance. This limit was then added to the European and British standards relevant for sunbeds. A sunbed with a UV output above this level is deemed as 'unsafe' by the regulatory bodies.
HOW WILL 0.3 TANNING AFFECT MY TAN?
• Your tan will be deeper and longer-lasting.
• The 0.3 tanning process is kinder to your skin.
• The risk of over-exposure or burning is substantially reduced on a 0.3 compliant sunbed.
Our beds are wiped down and cleaned after every client.
We are totally committed to ensure a hygenic and safe environment at all times.
Red Light Therapy also called Photo biomodulation (PBM) or low-level light therapy (LLLT) is completely safe, natural and non-invasive. Red light therapy gives your cells the boost they need to perform at their best. Our bed emits red light from 633nm to the 660nm and near infrared light at the 810nm to 940nm which is the optimum for what is called the 'therapeutic window'. Red and near infra-red wavelengths from a light therapy device stimulate mitochondria. Science has proven that these wavelengths of light cause your mitochondria to produce more energy (in the form of ATP). ATP (adenosine triphosphate) provides the fuel that each cell needs to carry out all of its functions, including regeneration and healing.
Red light therapy used very low levels of heat and does not hurt or burn the skin. It does not have any UV rays.
The age-old question.
Everything in moderation we say.
We have shared the benefits of tanning for years but there is a changing tide of opinion nowadays. The current opinion, based on research, states that managed sun exposure can have unexpected benefits on our skin. Our bodies have evolved ways to turn the sun's energy to our advantage.
But the main thing The Tanning Shop have always said is to tan responsibly. Burning is not tanning!
We have processes in place from the first time you register with us to help you manage your tanning journey and tan responsibly. Don't forget to manage your frequency and length of tanning session in line with your skin type, ask our staff in our salon for more details.
TAKE YOUR TIME
To build your glow it's important to gradually build your minutes up over time. This allows your skin to get used to the UV rays and will reduce the risk of over-exposure. Remember, slow and steady wins the race!
CONSIDER THE FREQUENCY OF YOUR SUNBED SESSIONS!
The frequency of your sessions all comes down to your skin type and your tanning preferences (whether you are building or maintaining your tan). If you are building your tan you may need to tan more frequently than when maintaining a tan.
Speak to a member of our team to discuss how often you should be tanning for your skin type.
ONLY USE UV-SPECIFIC LOTIONS
Always use a UV-specific lotion in your tanning sessions. These lotions include ingredients that not only help enhance tanning results and support the skin's natural melanin production but also help to nourish, hydrate and rejuvenate your skin. Using high-street brand lotions, oils and moisturisers can not only be damaging to your skin while using a sunbed but can also damage the equipment you are using.
When choosing a lotion you can choose between accelerators, intensifiers, DHA bronzersa and natural bronzers. Accelerators are advised for those who are just starting their tanning journey, this will help enhance your tanning results. Intensifiers are advised for those looking to take their base tan to the next level.
Finally bronzers for those who are more experienced with tanning and looking to take their shade to the next level! Natural immediate bronzers are made from natural ingredients such as caramel, henna, carrot oil and walnut shell. Natural bronzers can last up to a couple of days but will wash off with water. (think instant fake tan). DHA bronzers are a type of delayed bronzer. These provide gradual colour following your session which develops fully between 8 - 24 hours from your session and can last up to seven days (these have similar results to fake tan).
CARE FOR YOUR SKIN
It's essential to take care of your skin between sessions. Keeping your skin moisturised maintains your skin's hydration levels. Did you know hydrated and healthy skin tans better than dull, dry skin?
To maximise your tanning results you need to make sure you are looking after your skin.
Gently exfoliating your skin between sunbed sessions can help to remove dead skin cells which reflect UV light and can slow down the development of your tan.
It's also vital to keep your skin hydrated and moisturised! Using a skin-nourishing moisturiser daily can help to improve skin condition and improve your tanning results.
ALWAYS USE EYE PROTECTION
It is also vital that you use eye protection, designed to be used on a sunbed, at every session to protect your eyes. Whether you use disposable eye covers or reusable goggles, you must ALWAYS make sure that your eyes are covered whenever you use a sunbed. (Eye protection provided)
SUNBEDS AND THE SUN
It is important when using sunbeds you avoid any risk of overexposure. During your sunbed session, the bed emits a controlled level of UV output. If you then spend time sunbathing in direct sunshine your dose of UV is no longer controlled and this can lead to overexposure. We would always advise that you avoid tanning outdoors on the same day you have, or plan to have a sunbed session.
Moisture is key to tanning and a UV lotion is designed to replace moisture lost during the tanning session. However, this is not it's only function. Many lotions contain Tyrosine, an ingredient that stimulates the tanning process.
Other lotions contain cosmetic bronzers, or DHA (the main ingredient of fake tan). The new generation of lotions contain ingredients that refine and enhance the skin as well as ingredients that push the tanning process beyond the natural tanning plateau.
Our Tanning Consultants are trained to identify the type of lotion to suit your tanning requirements and even your preferences of scent and texture!
Dry skin reflects light and sheds more frequently. Any tan that develops is shallow and does not last. Moisturising is key to developing a deeper, darker tan. A week before your first session, thoroughly exfoliate and moisturise. Ensure that you moisturise after every bath or shower and use a UV specific lotion during your session.
While there is no research to indicate UV light would have a negative effect on an unborn baby, our policy is to prohibit the use of UV tanning equipment.
We advise that clients consult with their GP before undertaking any UV tanning package to treat a specific condition. Whereas UV light is believed to kill the bacteria associated with Acne, new developments in treatment of this skin condition and many others underlines the necessity to consult with a health professional.
However, UV tanning equipment is absolutely fantastic for the production of Vitamin D. Experts believe that having a vitamin D deficiency might limit the body's ability to keep skin healthy and as such, conditions such as Acne, Psoriasis and Eczema may be indirectly helped by ensuring that Vitamin D levels are maintained. Talk with your health professional about the different options you have available.
Links may exist between vitamin D and psoriasis. Some research suggests that low levels of vitamin D can trigger the immune system. It is possible that boosting vitamin D levels may help reduce symptoms of psoriasis.
Vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin, is very important for maintaining and supporting the health of bones, teeth, the immune system, and other parts of the body, including the skin. Some scientists have found links between vitamin D and some skin conditions, including psoriasis.
